My “Mom Mission”– Quieting a Cough in the Middle of the Night

Vicks VapoRub to the Rescue!

Since my kids have already missed two weeks of school due to Tropical Storm Irene and the freak “Halloween snow storm,” I’m doing everything possible to keep them healthy and not miss another day of school.

So when my youngest daughter started developing a cough I went into complete attack mode! Everything got wiped down, hands were washed on an hourly basis and she was loaded up with Vitamin C. I also started the great mom debate in my head – how bad is too bad to send her to school? Are a little sniffles and a cough reason to keep her out? As a working mom you always worry about being chastised by the teacher and incurring the wrath of the other moms for sending your kid to school because you have to work. But, a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do and, for me, it was finding a way to get her well enough to go to school.

When she first went to bed everything seemed fine but then, as soon as I dozed off, the coughing started. Then, the next “mom question” starts – do I risk actually waking her up to ply her with cough medicine or wait it out.

Last year was the first time I had heard another mom’s secret about putting Vicks VapoRub on the bottom of your child’s feet and will be subdue the cough. I had never tried it and I realize that it’s an “off-label” use of the product not endorsed by Vicks and, to be honest, I really couldn’t understand how this would work, but I figured I had nothing to lose. So, into her room I sneak armed with the Vicks, a flashlight and a tiny pair of socks. Of course, since she sleeps on the top bunk of her bunk bed, I felt like some secret agent stealthily climbing up the ladder with the flashlight in my mouth and the Vicks and socks in my one free hand. With just a little wiggling, my mission was accomplished. Now, I was left to wait and see.

Sure enough – it worked! Mission successful! The Vicks VapoRub on the feet is not an urban legend! There have been so many times that Vicks has been my hero for helping my sick kids which is why I love being part of the Vicks Bloggers. One quieted cough + one well rested little girl = a happy day at school the next day.
